A Different Kind of "Groundbreaking"

Everyone is invited to attend a very special event next week - the "groundbreaking" for the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico. The "quotes" are needed because this won't be your typical groundbreaking event.

The museum will actually look like a ship coming in to port in the Mobile River. So instead of shoveling dirt, the ceremony will be a keel laying, like what would be done for an actual boat.

The public is encouraged to take part in the festivities at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 9 at Mobile Landing, the city’s downtown riverfront development and the museum’s future site (between Cooper-Riverside Park and the cruise terminal).

Scheduled to speak are Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, Mobile City Council President Reggie Copeland and E.B. Peebles III, chairman of the Maritime Museum Board of Trustees. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the United States Navy Band New Orleans.
